CNN, which recently tackled the history of comedy, does a decent job of showing off its pop credentials, although it’s a little puzzling that the news network couldn’t secure bigger names for the first episode, which focuses on the assassination of the Rev. “Soundtracks: Songs That Defined History,” an eight-part series that looks at world events through the background music, is the kind of project MTV and VH1 used to specialize in. They are, by their very definition, an anomaly of sorts.
